former White House Budget Director Peter Orszag, penned a piece this week in the New Republic arguing, as the title says, "Why we need less democracy." Orszag wrote that "the country's political polarization was growing worse -- harming Washington's ability to do the basic, necessary work of governing." His solution? "[W]e need to minimize the harm from legislative inertia by relying more on automatic policies and depoliticized commissions for certain policy decisions. In other words, radical as it sounds, we need to counter the gridlock of our political institutions by making them a bit less democratic."Another, the Governor of North Carolina, who not only up for reelection next year, but also being invesitgated for criminal misuse of campaign funds...but her comments are being touted as "jokes".
Orszag's view is typical of Obama White House alumni. Last year, former auto czar Steve Rattner wrote in his book, "Overhaul," "Either Congress needs to get its act together or we should explore alternatives. ... If our country wants to do a better job of solving its problems, it needs to find a way to let talented government officials operate more like they do in the private sector." True to the founding ideals of the progressive movement, both men are suggesting that enlightened technocrats who know best should be allowed to operate the federal government independent of popular will.
Here's a link to video of Mrs. Perdue, but the money quote is:
“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover,” Perdue said at a rotary club event in Cary, N.C., according to the Raleigh News & Observer. “I really hope that someone can agree with me on that.”I recently posted this comment on an article in the Daily Caller:
I live in BLUE/BLUE Metro-Baltimore-DC area, this is belief that Congress is "broken" is widespread. It's often bandied about that elections should be "suspended for the duration of the crisis." But then, that's what the National Socialists did in Germany...suspend elections for the duration.Comments like the headliners ... are fueling this belief even more. It appears that the Democratic Party is attempting to start a Nazi style coup against the US Constitution. Remember, the Nazi's were legally elected to a slim majority in the Reichstag...they eventually installed a single party dictatorship. This sort of talk by the Democrats could very well be not just an attempt to divert another electoral thumping, but the intitution of a dictatorship by "progressive elements."
If the Democrats want to suspend elections, I suspect that the Civil War they are trying to foment (just as Democratif president, James Buchanan did 160 years ago) will break out far faster than they believe.
