Basically what this is all about is really quite simple. If you are a Democrat and pursue the "correct progressive" agenda, you can do and say what ever you desire. Not pay your income taxes? NP if you're a Dem. Half the cabinet has tax "issues" as do many of the Democratic leadership in the House (Dem's PA Rep. Jack Murtha and NY Charlie Rangel were recently "cleared" of ethics violations). That's what is at issue here. There is a double standard that Mr. Reid's case merely heightens.
While the mass of people in this country are oblivious to what goes on in Washington, DC, they're NOT stupid. Once they begin to take notice...politicians generally end up paying by losing elections. This year, will be another "slaughter" as the people have become disgusted by the antics of the present ruling party. That party will end up paying. The real problems is that the country as a whole, doesn't have much respect for the GOP either. Their leadership is seen as a large part of the problem, being much the same as the Democrats.
The time is ripe for the rise of a new political movement. I have come to the conclusion that the Tea Party is it...though it is still in the nascent stage. So far, only one politician has jumped on that wagon, the gentleman running for TN-9 seat in the House...it remains to be seen if others will join. If they do, I can see the GOP, while gaining seats this November, attempting to woo the newly elected "independents" who run on the Tea Party Platform. While those possible winners may caucus with the GOP, they won't BE in the GOP...at the moment voter dissatisfaction is the highest I've ever seen (I'm 47)...lots of things can happen. We'll see this fall.

Maybe, maybe not. Both the Democratic and Republican parties are creatures of special interests. It's just that they answer to different special interests.
I once thought a third party might be the answer, but I fear a third party would simply be captured by special interests. The Democrats have been a Big Govt. party since 1933. The Republicans under GWB also became a Big Govt. party.
The loss of faith and trust is so palpable it can be cut with a knife. I fear our problems cannot be resolved within the context of the existing political order.
Yes, they can be resolved w/in the existing political order. The remanents of the Whig party coalesced around the "new" Republican Party...just as those who are fiscal conservatives are beginning to coalesce into the "Tea Party"...
But you are correct, special interests (big money) has captured both major parties. So we change the party system! It's possible, it's been done 3 times in our history. It can be done again.
