GOP To Cave On Gun Control

It appears that the Party Of Stupid's Elite leadership is prepared to cave on gun control.  From a couple of reports, they will allow a national data base that will record all gun sales and ownership to be created.  This give the government quite literally a list of everyone who buys and sells guns across the country.
[The] Republican Majority Leader is leading the charge to cut a deal with President Obama.
The following are just some of the threats to innocent school children and our God-given 2nd Amendment liberties that Republicans are about to shove down our throats:
1.The NRA is cutting backroom deals to centralize gun owner data collection into the Obama/Holder massive government data base.
A centralized system is less costly to fight and far more lucrative for the NRA to appear to be “fixing“.
Like all establishment political lobbies the key to their job security is assisting in making problems they end up being called upon to “fix“.
2. Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor is leading the charge to give Obama and Holder what they want in exchange for appearing to be “fixing” the problem of innocent children being butchered in our public and private schools.
3. Newly appointed Republican Judiciary Chairman, Bob Goodlatte R-VA 6th District, is providing political cover for the sneaky back room gun control deals and gun grabbing sell outs that his political masters - – John Boehner and Eric Cantor – - are cutting with Obama and his corrupt Attorney General, Eric Holder.
Political insiders have confirmed to me, that Goodlatte earned his brand new chairmanship by ignoring the constitutional demands and grievances of every Republican Unit Chairman in his own 6th district.
Eric Cantor and  Paul Ryan are the ones leading the charge on this one.  What makes this so onerous is that for the 1st time, the government will know WHO is buying and selling.  That's the first step towards confiscation.  For the 1st time, an American government will have the ability, if it so decides to take away firearms from lawful citizens.  That's the slippery slope.

This also calls into play the rumours that the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, was planning to pass laws without a majority of his GOP caucus.  The GOP ain't called the Party of Stupid for nothing.  Then there's this;
You might think that with Republicans in control of the US House of Representatives there would be no way ANY gun control legislation could reach the floor.
But sadly we are already beginning to see so-called “conservative champions” folding to pressure from the anti-gun media to sell-out gun owners.

Former Vice Presidential candidate, Congressman Paul Ryan, has stated that he would support legislation that bans private sales at gun shows.

In the House, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, along with the help of Rep. Scott Rigell (VA), Patrick Meehan (PA) and others, have stated openly that they will work together with anti-gun Democrats from Maryland and New York to tighten restrictions on private firearms sales and expand background checks.

Possibly even more upsetting has been Senator Tom Coburn’s willingness to work alongside anti-gunner Chuck Schumer (NY) to propose “bi-partisan” anti-gun legislation in the Senate.
Make no mistake, so-called “expansion” of background checks is little more than a blatant attempt by anti-gunners to register all firearms and gun owners in America.

That is why Representatives Steve Stockman (TX-36) and Paul Broun (GA-10) have drafted a letter to Speaker Boehner and the Republican leadership urging them to require the support of the majority of Republican members in the House before bringing any anti-gun bills to the floor.

This so-called “Hastert Rule” would mean that 117 Republicans would have to support a particular bill before it had any chance of getting a floor vote, not just the support of the anti-gun elitist in leadership.
If the Republican elite leadership really wanted to to destroy the party and go the way of the Whigs...this is surely it.  They were winning the hearts and minds of America, which has been hardening its position on defense of the 2nd Amendment.  By caving into Liberals & Democrats demands to do something "for the cheeldren"...will be the rock upon which the party crashes.

There can be no compromise upon America's right to defend ourselves against the tyranny of government.  The 2nd Amendment is the rock upon which that right stands.  To force any crack into is to lead to the loss of that right and therefore, NO COMPROMISE may be allowed.  None, nein, nyet, ni...NO COMPROMISE.

This issue could lead to taking back the US Senate...by forcing the Senators in red states, who are up for reelection to take stands that are against their consituents desires...it cost Dem's Congress in 1994...and will in 2014, but only if the Party of Stupid isn't struck by Stupid!  Don't listen to just me.  There are people all over the country that this will enrage.
Such political ploys would be unnecessary if the GOP weren’t filled with such weasels. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of these reports, but I have followed Cantor and Ryan for a while now on firearms freedoms and gun rights, and it doesn’t surprise me in the least.

It’s fascinating that the GOP leadership would be willing to sacrifice their careers on the altar of political correctness. And it will cost them their careers. I don’t know how else to say it other than to keep repeating myself. The gun owners who recently waited in lines for three or more hours to pay exorbitant prices for guns were not repeat buyers (long time gun owners like me already had most of the firearms we wanted and so we are purchasing ammunition now). They were first time buyers.

I’ve watched them at the ranges. I have overheard their conversations, I have watched them at the gun stores and gun shows. I have heard their relatively ignorant questions (not ignorant because they’re stupid, but because they’re in the process of learning). They are not us. We already have guns. These are new gun owners. The polls they are trotting out to show the number of gun owners decreasing are all lies.
I don’t know whether the questions aren’t being honestly answered or what other source there could be for the error. But the polls are in error. Don’t believe them. And as for older gun owners like me, and even the newer gun owners like I have monitored for the past half year, we have made it clear with our voices and wallets. No new gun laws. None. Period. Not one more inch. Not one.
I've been saying for a while that it's time to either get rid of the leadership of the GOP in Congress.  They've gone along to get along for so long, they don't know how to do anything else.  They've sold their principles for invitations to be on the "A" list for party invitations inside the beltway...forgetting that the Republican Party used to have ideas...ideas like small government...staunch support of America's right to defend itself from government tyranny...balancing the budget...

Principles are important...until you throw them out the window.  When you do that, you can forget why you were sent to Congress.  The GOP leadership has forgotten what they stand for.  It's time to either get rid of them, or get rid of the party they putatively represent and find new leaders who WILL stand for their principles.

Replace those departments with block grants to the various states.  Furthermore, eliminate the strangling regulations that those departments, agencies and offices on the economy

Clint Eastwood's Speech

It's a very simple speech.  Not eloquent in the Obama mode, but rather that of an ordinary man, who...once disappointed, won't ever make that mistake again.  In his own words,

An elegant speech from the heart.  You  don't hear those at political conventions...ever.  My hat is off to Mr. Eastwood, and I hope that Messers Romney and Ryan can, in the end, "retire" Mr. Obama from office ('retire' is the term Mr. Carter uses when describing the asswhoopin' he got in 1980).

Election 2012: The Bottom Line

Every once in a while, I read something that really strikes a cord.  This election isn't about Romney/Obama, it's about the direction the country is currently heading.  It's about whether or not Americans will have control of the direction their lives go, or whether the government will.

There is not a single Obama voter anywhere in the land who believes that another four years of him will make this country better. Not a single one from coast to coast. No, what they believe is that he will make the country a worse place for those people that they hate. That he will have four more years to sink their ideas deeper in the earth, regardless of how many families go hungry and how many fathers kill themselves because they can no longer take care of their families. What they believe is that Obama will grant their group more special privileges and the rest of the country can go to hell.

 .
– Daniel Greenfield on “The Most Divisive Campaign in American History.”  Here's some more;

Obama can't win on the economy. He can't win on foreign policy. He can't win on any aspect of his administration. All he can do is stir up violence and then promise to heal the country in his second term while winking to all the representatives of the grievance groups. It's not a new game, but the Democratic Party has never played it quite this baldly in a national election. And if it succeeds, then national politics will have finally been reduced to the level of a Chicago election.

We were expected to believe that the typical Obama voter in 2008 was hoping for a better country, but in 2012 there is no more hope, only hate and fear. The typical Obama voter is not acting as an American, but as a representative of an entitled group looking to secure and expand those entitlements at the expense and the detriment of the country at large.

To vote for Obama after years of grotesque economic mismanagement that has no precedent in history, that exceeds the worst actions of Andrew Jackson or Ulysses S. Grant, is not the instinct of an American, but a selfish greedy looter scrambling to grab a few dinner rolls off the tray while the ship is going down. There is no policy justification for voting for a man with the worst economic and foreign policy record in the country's history. There is no American justification for voting for him. Only the UnAmerican motivation of carving up a dying country into group fiefdoms privileging identity politics over the common good.

And, that ladies and gentlemen is what this election is about.  Every so often, there comes a turning point in our history.  One at which We The People have a say in  what direction we want the country to go.  This election is our choice...to choose government control of our lives, or to be able to grab the reigns ourselves...we have 83 days left to choose wisely.

And So It Begins...

Over the next few months we can expect all of the MSM to palinize Paul Ryan as a horrible racist and mysoginist.  It's started yesterday and you can expect it to build into a crescendo over the next month.

Write In Candidates...

I have decided that since I really don't like any of the current crop of GOP candidates for President, I'll write in someone else instead. Either Paul Ryan or Sarah Palin. Since I live in Maryland, it doesn't really matter during the primary season who I vote for, my vote really won't count in the great grand scheme of things. BUT! I would dearly love to send a message to the "elite leadership" of the Republican Party, that I am very deeply unhappy with them and the direction they are taking the party. The time of "going along to get along" ends now. No more bi-partisanship...in other words no more going along with the Democrats and giving them everything they want, withough regards of the consequenses to the country. Every time our Congressional leadership "goes along" with the bi-partisan deals they cut, the [Social] Democrats renig...It's time to send a message to the party, that we the base have had enough.

Paul Ryan Not Running For President...bummin'...

According to ABC news, Congressman Paul Ryan will NOT be running for President next year.  That's bad for the country...

After much speculation and some pressure from fellow Republicans, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin and the House Budget Committee Chairman, says he is NOT running for President.

"I sincerely appreciate the support from those eager to chart a brighter future for the next generation. While humbled by the encouragement, I have not changed my mind, and therefore I am not seeking our party's nomination for President. I remain hopeful that our party will nominate a candidate committed to a pro-growth agenda of reform that restores the promise and prosperity of our exceptional nation. I remain grateful to those I serve in Southern Wisconsin for the unique opportunity to advance this effort in Congress."

Paul Ryan: A Duty To Serve

Recently, Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) said that he didn't want to run for president because,
Ryan has said that one reason he is not interested in running for president is that he would have to spend time away from his family, including three young children.
As a former US Marine...at some point in their every single American has a duty to serve our country, in some shape form or fashion, even if it's only showing up to a retail store to work.  But, Jenifer Rubin in her WaPo blog, Right Turns, makes this devastating point:
I do not know Paul Ryan. I am not acquainted with him. I have never even met the man. If I knew him at all well, I would walk into his office and slap down on his desk Jennifer Rubin’s post. As she points out, lots of Americans in uniform have answered their country’s call. Here is the question I would ask Ryan: “In this crisis, how can you of all people justify not doing what those soldiers have done?” And here is the argument that I would make: “You have the preparation; you have the training; you have the temperament; you have the knowledge; you have the persuasive capacity. We now face a great crisis, and you understand what has to be done better than anyone else. Your country needs you. In the circumstances, what possible excuse could trump that? You have a duty to serve.”

Mr. Ryan, you are currently, the only member of the GOP leadership that has a clue about the myriad of problems that face this country.  More importantly, you are the only "official" member of the leadership that has actually had the balls to put out a plan on how to undo the economic train-wreck that the Democratic party and Barack Obama has turned us into.

Therefore sir, you have the DUTY to serve!  It's time to ante up and put your money where your mouth is.  You can talk the talk, not it's time to walk...down Pennsylvania Avenue in January, 2013 and take the oath of office...here's a web page petition to draft Mr. Ryan. I signed it.

Saving Medicare: Free Market Reforms Are Better

Here's a great video, via Instapundit, on who is right on Medicare reform.

It's narrated by Dan Mitchell.  the video has two sections.
The first part reviews Congressman Ryan’s proposal and notes that it is based on a plan put together with Alice Rivlin, who served as Director of the Office of Management and Budget under Bill Clinton. Among serious budget people (as opposed to the hacks on Capitol Hill), this is an important sign of bipartisan support.
The video also notes that the “voucher” proposal is actually very similar to the plan that is used by Members of Congress and their staff. This is a selling point that proponents should emphasize since most Americans realize that lawmakers would never subject themselves to something that didn’t work.

Why NOT Newt?

Well, that's actually pretty easy.  Here's the first reason,

Then there's the divorces, cheating on his wives, having resigned from Congress, and DeDe Scozafava...its a long list, but basically, he's far too flawed.  I'd like to see Paul Ryan run, failing that I'll support Herman Cain, because he has the sense NOT to flame out in a debate by answering stupidly.
Ever since the South Carolina Republican presidential debate, reporters have continued to challenge me for not having a specific plan for our nation’s involvement in Afghanistan. They continue to think that if you are running for president then you must have an answer for everything. I don’t! A real leader has the right questions for everything.

When asked about what I would do about our involvement in the war in Afghanistan during the debate, I answered by asking the questions that should have been asked before we got involved many years ago. What is our mission? How does it serve our interest? Is there a path to victory? If not, then what is our exit strategy?

I ask these questions instead of “shooting from the lip” because there is obviously a lot of classified information to which I do not have access. There are dozens of experts and military leaders I would need advice from before I could make an informed decision about a real clear plan for the USA’s involvement in Afghanistan. Similarly, a real clear strategy for every country with which we have relationships would be developed, regardless of whether or not we are involved in a military conflict.
At least he has the sense to know what he doesn't know, and say so.  I don't expect my president to have all the answers to every question, problem.  But I do expect him to lead, and not from behind as our current one has taken to doing.  It's going to take a while for Mr. Cain's candidacy to take off...because the MSM is basically ignoring him.  After all, they can't call him a racist.  Jim Treacher has this to  say about him,
The more I listen to Herman Cain, the more I like him. Which I guess only counts if you think likability is a factor in electing a president. And, being of a mischievous mind, I can just imagine how he’d confound the race-obsessed left as an opponent. “Holy crap, what do we do? This guy is so black, he makes Obama look like Edgar Winter’s bloodless corpse half-buried in a snowbank. Begin Operation: Clarence Thomas!”

Because that’s all they can see. They can’t fathom that people could actually be drawn to Cain by who he is and what he says, not which box he checks under “Race.” It might actually be about… oh, what was that thing called? Oh yeah: the content of his character.
We'll see what happens.  But I won't support Newt, not for any reason.

UPDATE, the 1st:  Via Allahpundit  "If you thought the Foxies might go easy on one of their own (former) contributors, think again."  Here's Charles Krauthammer on Newt:

and Brit Hume:
I'd say, that unless Newt can come up with some serious reasons why We The People should take him seriously...he's finished.

Boehner Sells Out (again...)

Speaker of the House, John Boehner (R-OH) has indicated that he will raise the debt ceiling.  In doing so, he will be flying in the face of what he promised last year, substantive, substantial cuts in the both the federal budget, but the huge deficit as well.  Bloomberg is reporting that,
House Speaker John Boehner said “it’s clear” the U.S. must raise its debt limit, responding to President Barack Obama’s efforts to secure backing to extend the government’s borrowing authority.

“At some point it’s clear to me that we have to increase the debt ceiling,” Boehner, an Ohio Republican, said yesterday on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “And as we do, we’re going to do it in a way that addresses America’s long-term fiscal challenges.”
Yet again, proving that the GOP leadership in Congress are "going along to get along."  They, the GOP leadership are part of the problem and not part of the solution. This goes along with the betrayal when we were promised that there would $100 billion dollars cuts immediately...what we got was $38 billion, and that was hailed a a huge cut...until you consider that this years deficit tops $1,700,000,000,000.00...  That comes to less than .38% cut.  Nothing, not even a drop in the bucket.

Now, we're being told that we must permit this spendthrift president to continue taking the country down the road to financial ruin, and the GOP will just help him along.

We've been told that if the Chinese, who hold huge amounts of US Treasury bonds were to reduce their holdings, that would be catastrophic to the US economy.  Guess what...the Chinese have, for the 5th straight month, reduced  their holdings of US Treasury bonds.
China, the biggest buyer of U.S. securities, trimmed its holdings for a fifth straight month.  The Treasury Department said Monday that China cut its holdings by $9.2 billion to $1.14 trillion.
Instead of cutting the deficit, we're gettinng Kabuki Theatre...just going along to get along.  Mr. Boehner, you were given a majority in the House of Representatives to substantially cut spending.  Paul Ryan (R-WI) has given you a plan to do so...so dammit, start working on real substantive cuts NOW!  We can't afford not to.

Mr. Boehner, if you don't follow up your words of last year, next year will so the GOP thrown out of office in records numbers.  Just as the Democrats were turned out wholesale.

Paul Ryan For President, 2012

In a series of blog posts, Paul Rahe iterates both the problems the confront the current leadership of America.  His post on Barack Obama is clear and devastating in it's indictment that Mr. Obama doesn't have the executive instincts necessary to lead and make those difficult decisions that a president must make
...from the outset, he conducted himself in an irresponsible fashion that is highly unpresidential...With regard to domestic affairs, he seems not to have recognized that, under our Constitution, it is the President of the United States who represents the national interest; that Congressmen more often than not cater to particular interests; that, if legislation is left to the latter, principle tends to give way to patronage; and that the result can be a profound embarrassment. And so he stood idly by while Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and the like drafted legislation – a so-called “stimulus bill” and healthcare reform, each more than a thousand pages in length, each embodying a multitude of corrupt bargains, each threatening to bankrupt the country. And, like a political hack, faithful to his party to the bitter end, he promoted and signed their handiwork...He forgot that, in the larger world, the President represents his country. Out of personal pique, he persistently insulted our friends abroad, displaying disdain for Gordon Brown, stiffing Nicholas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel, treating Benyamin Netanyahu with open contempt, and turning his back on the people of Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Iran. At the same time, he embraced Hugo Chavez, sucked up to Vladimir Putin, and kowtowed to the rulers of Saudi Arabia and China – all to no avail.
He then iterates the good and bad points of Bobby Jindal, Chris Christie, and Mitch Daniels all of whom have the requisite exective experience and who have had to take responsiblity for their states and attempt to  clean up the mess that has been handed to them.  But most of all, our next president must have principles as well as the ability to make hard decisions, but also to follow through with those decisions.  That's something the current incumbent just doesn't have.
The current President, as I argued in detail in the piece linked above, perfectly exemplifies what it means to lack executive temperament. He is a man who is most happy when he can vote present. He outsourced the framing of major legislation to Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and the like, and we got bills thousands of pages in length that no one voting on them understood. With regard to Iran, Afghanistan, and Libyan, he dithered and dithered and resorted to half-measures, and in each case we find ourselves mired in a mess. And he is still whining that the state of today’s economy is the responsibility of George W. Bush. Can you imagine Jindal, Christie, Daniels, or Pawlenty leaving matters of this sort to Congress and always looking for an easy out? Can you imagine Haley Barbour, Scott Walker, Rick Perry, Sarah Palin, Nikki Haley, or John Kasich doing the like? I can’t. Their instinct is to take charge, and they relish the opportunity.
His answer to the above?  Congressman Paul Ryan.
Paul Ryan is a young man – forty-one years in age. He attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and did a B. A. in economics and political science. After working in various congressional offices and writing speeches for Bill Bennett and Jack Kemp, he was elected to Congress from Wisconsin in 1998. He has never held executive office, served as a general, or led a corporation – which ought to give one pause. But he has done something else strongly suggesting (but not proving) executive capacity, and in this particular he reminds me of Lincoln.
Lincoln was propelled from obscurity to fame by the Lincoln-Douglas debates. In running for the Senate in Illinois in 1858 – in a situation in which victory would accrue to the candidate whose party won the state house and senate – Lincoln conducted himself in the manner of an executive, and his party won a majority of the votes cast in the pertinent races but failed to gain a majority of seats in the two houses because of gerrymandering. In his debates with a renowned sitting Senator likely to be the Democratic presidential nominee in 1860, Lincoln took firm, principled stands, and he articulated with great eloquence the case for his views. In the process, he forced Douglas to clarify his own views on the question of slavery in the territories in such a fashion as to make him unacceptable to the hardliners increasingly dominant in the South. The debates were printed in the press and reissued in pamphlet form thereafter. By bearding the little giant, Lincoln made of himself a national figure.

Ryan has done something similar. From his perch as Chairman of the Budget Committee in the House of Representatives, he has laid out a budget that serves as a challenge to the administrative state and that promises to move us back in the direction of fiscal sobriety. He has done this; he has repeatedly confronted the President in debates less formal and less dramatic than the Lincoln-Douglas debates but no less decisive in shaping public opinion, and he has won. For more than a year, he has been our standard-bearer, and it is his firmness and resolve in articulating what it in practice means to sustain a limited government that has thus far carried the day. Moreover, in shaping his proposed budget, he has managed in a statesmanlike fashion to get his fellow Republicans in the House of Representatives on board. He has not dodged responsibility; he has seized it. He is the man of the hour.
I have been an admirer of Paul Ryan since he published his "Road Map For America."   I took the time to read the whole thing.  It's long, a whole 93 pages...well, not that long, but it's the first genuine attempt by anyone from either party to tackle the huge problems that we as a nation face.  He seems to be the only politician on the national stage who has any plan at all.  Mr. Obama certainly doesn't seem to have a coherent plan, nor do any of the other possible contenders.

Perhaps, it's time for the GOP to look outside the usual suspects and take a long hard look at Mr. Ryan...

A Conservative Manifesto For Reforming Government

Representative Paul Ryan is the only Republican to come up with a comprehensive plan to reform spending in Washington.  Here's the summary from his plan:

A Roadmap for America’s Future is a comprehensive alternative to the heavily government-centered ideology now prevailing in Washington, which pursues a relentless expansion of government, creates a growing culture of dependency, and in the process worsens a status quo that already threatens to overwhelm the budget and smother the economy.

The Roadmap – updated since its previous introduction in 2008, to reflect the dramatic decline in the Nation’s economic and fiscal condition – draws on Americans’ strengths to restore the Nation’s legacy of leaving the next generation better off. It achieves three key objectives:

PROVIDING HEALTH AND RETIREMENT SECURITY. The plan ensures universal access to health insurance; and it rescues and strengthens Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security – allowing them to fulfill their missions and making them permanently solvent.

LIFTING THE DEBT BURDEN. It returns Federal spending growth to sustainable rates, and lifts the huge projected debt burden from the shoulders of future generations.

PROMOTING AMERICAN JOB CREATION AND COMPETITIVENESS. It promotes solid, sustained economic growth and job creation here in America, and puts the United States in a position to lead – not merely survive – in the global marketplace. The plan also modernizes job training programs to meet the effects of globalization.

Why America Needs an Alternative. America faces an immense challenge – and an extraordinary opportunity.

THE CHALLENGE. The Federal Government’s current fiscal path is unsustainable: it leads to unprecedented levels of spending, deficits, and debt that will overwhelm the budget, smother the economy, weaken America’s competitiveness in the global 21st century economy, and threaten the survival of the government’s major benefit programs. The President and congressional Majority are hastening America’s march toward this reckoning, adding to trillions of dollars worth of unfunded liabilities, and accelerating the erosion of Americans’ health care and retirement security. Their “progressive” ideology leads to a future in which America’s best century is the past century.

THE OPPORTUNITY. Putting the Nation on a sustainable fiscal course may be one of the greatest domestic challenges in America’s history. But it is also an extraordinary opportunity to restore a national character rooted in individual initiative, entrepreneurship, and opportunity – and to transform the Federal Government to the realities of the 21st century.

Major Plan Components.

HEALTH CARE. The plan ensures universal access to affordable health insurance by restructuring the tax code, allowing all Americans to secure affordable health plans that best suits their needs, and shifting the ownership of health coverage away from the government and employers to individuals.
- Provides a refundable tax credit – $2,300 for individuals and $5,700 for families – to purchase coverage in any State, and keep it with them if they move or change jobs.
- Establishes transparency in health care price and quality data, so this critical information is readily available before an individual needs health services.
- Modernizes Medicaid and strengthens the health care safety net by reforming high-risk pools, giving States maximum flexibility to tailorMedicaid programs to the specific needs of their populations. Allows Medicaid recipients to take part in the same variety of options by using the tax credit to purchase high-quality care.
MEDICARE. The Roadmap secures Medicare for current beneficiaries, while making common-sense reforms to keep it solvent for the long term.
- Preserves the existing Medicare program for those 55 or older.
- For those currently under 55 – as they become Medicare-eligible – creates a Medicare payment averaging $11,000 per year when fully phased in. Adjusts the payment for inflation, and pegs it to income, with low-income individuals receiving greater support. Provides risk adjustment, so those with greater medical needs receive a higher payment.
- In addition to the Medicare payment, establishes and fully funds Medical Savings Accounts [MSAs] for low-income beneficiaries (to cover out-ofpocket costs), while continuing to allow all beneficiaries, regardless of income, to set up tax-free MSAs.
- Makes Medicare permanently solvent, based on Congressional Budget Office [CBO] estimates and consultation with the Office of the Actuary of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
SOCIAL SECURITY. The proposal saves and strengthens this important retirement program and makes it sustainable for the long term.
- Preserves the existing Social Security program for those 55 or older.
- Offers workers under 55 the option of investing over one third of their current Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts, similar to the Thrift Savings Plan available to Federal employees. Includes a property right so they can pass on these assets to their heirs, and a guarantee that individuals will not lose a dollar they contribute to their accounts, even after inflation.
- Makes the program permanently solvent, according to the CBO, by combining a more realistic measure of growth in Social Security’s initial benefits, with a gradual, modest increase in the retirement age, consistent with Americans’ improving lifespans.
TAX REFORM. This plan offers an alternative to today’s needlessly complex and inefficient tax code, providing the option of a simplified mechanism that better promotes and rewards work, saving, and investment.
- Provides taxpayers a choice of how to pay their income taxes – through existing law, or through a highly simplified income tax system that fits on a postcard with just two rates and virtually no special tax deductions credits, or exclusions (except the health care tax credit).
- Simplifies tax rates to 10 percent on income up to $100,000 for joint filers, and $50,000 for single filers; and 25 percent on taxable income above these amounts. Also includes a generous standard deduction and personal exemption (totaling $39,000 for a family of four).
- Eliminates the alternative minimum tax [AMT].
- Promotes saving by eliminating taxes on interest, capital gains, and dividends; also eliminates the death tax.
- Replaces the corporate income tax – currently the second highest in the industrialized world – with a border-adjustable business consumption tax of 8.5 percent. This new rate is roughly half that of the rest of the industrialized world.
JOB TRAINING. The Roadmap helps the Nation’s workforce prepare for success in the global economy by transforming 49 job training programs, scattered across eight agencies, into a flexible, dynamic strategy focused on results, and accompanied by clear measures of transparency and accountability. The plan requires the development of performance measures, and gives each State the option to consolidate funding into one program, if such an approach can be shown to improve outcomes and achieve job training goals.

Why ‘A Roadmap for America’s Future’ is Different.
As mentioned above, the status quo is not sustainable. But Washington’s current leaders are making matters worse. The Roadmap is not simply a slimmer version of the “progressive” government expansion now prevailing in Washington. It is a true alternative, and a complete legislative proposal consisting of specific policies supported by CBO estimates of its fiscal and economic consequences.

Other key features of the plan:
COMPREHENSIVENESS. Whether the issue is health care, international competitiveness, or debt, piecemeal, incremental “fixes” will never match the magnitude, urgency, and interrelated nature of America’s greatest domestic NOTE: The “current policy” paths in the graphics above reflect what the Congressional Budget Office [CBO], in its June 2009 report The Long-Term Budget Outlook, terms its “alternative fiscal scenario.” In describing this projection, CBO says it “represents one interpretation of what it would mean to continue today’s underlying fiscal policy,” and that it reflects “policy changes that are widely expected to occur and that policymakers have regularly made in the past.” challenges. This plan provides the comprehensive approach critical for achieving real, long-term solutions.

BACKED UP BY NUMBERS. It is a real plan, with real proposals, real numbers to back them up, and real legislation to implement it. Based on estimates provided by the CBO, this plan is projected to make the Social Security and Medicare programs permanently solvent. It will lift the growing debt burden on future generations, and hold Federal taxes to no higher than 19 percent of GDP.

A TRUE ALTERNATIVE. This plan is based on a fundamentally different vision. It focuses government on its proper role; it restrains government spending, thus limiting the size of government itself; it rejuvenates the vibrant market economy that made America the envy of the world; and it restores an American character rooted in individual initiative, entrepreneurship, and opportunity – qualities that make each American’s pursuit of personal destiny a net contribution to the Nation’s common good as well. In short, it is built on the enduring truths from which America’s Founders established this great and exceptional Nation.
If the GOP in Congress had any balls, they would adopt this plan and run with it.  Use it to fundamentally change the direction of America, since our sitting president has no ability to lead...
The message of the budget the Obama administration released today is the same as the message the president delivered in his State of the Union address: All is well, full speed ahead, and let’s invest a little more in solar panels and high-speed rail.
...and is merely upping the ante in his poker game for re-election by proposing a $3,700,000,000,000.00 budget that includes a $1,650,000,000,000.00 deficit and calling is spending cuts.

Unfortuantely for America, the GOP in Congress are already hemming an hawing
But others, including some of the selfsame tea-party heroes who raised hell over what amounts to one percent of the budget, are hemming and hawing on the Roadmap and entitlement reform in general — non-committal at best and cowardly at worst.  Rep. Allen West (R., Fla.) calls Ryan’s plan “a good start” but “not perfect,” and calls for Republicans to be “flexible.” Rep. Kristi Noem (R., N.D.), already the recipient of favorable Sarah Palin comparisons, says she likes portions of the Roadmap but hasn’t “explored too far.” That dog-ate-my-homework theme repeats itself among a number of freshman, and maybe it’s even true, but then are there members like Rep. Steve Chabot (R., Ohio), an RSC guy now entering his eighth term, who says he is “still studying” the Roadmap and is “not ready to announce a position” just yet. Well, maybe by his tenth term.
..and generally just playing politics now that it's come down the brass tacks.  We have to do something or we will be in the shoes the Greeks are in already...and that day will arrive within the next five years...

Shit, even Andrew Sullivan is freaking out over this budget...and say's that Obama is
The crisis is the cost of future entitlements and defense, about which Obama proposes nothing. Yes, there's some blather. But Obama will not risk in any way any vulnerability on taxes to his right or entitlement spending to his left. He convened a deficit commission in order to throw it in the trash. If I were Alan Simpson or Erskine Bowles, I'd feel duped. And they were duped. All of us who took Obama's pitch as fiscally responsible were duped.
That's from one of his cheerleaders on the left.  Mr. Obama is making a cynical political move by proposing a budget that will never make it though the Senate (that his party controls), much less the House which is controlled by the GOP...who don't have the balls to do what needs to be done to return this country to a sound fiscal basis...G-d help  us all....

A Roadmap for America's Future: Rep Paul Ryan's Plan To Get America Back On Track

I've come to the conclusion that those "political elites" in Washington, DC have forgotten that very basic lesson in American government. Lately, too many laws have been passed that have given the federal government direct interference in the daily lives of all Americans. ObamaCare, unconstitutionally has given the government power to REQUIRE each and every one of us to purchase health insurance, under penalty of fines (a tax in all but name). This power isn't available to the federal government and is clearly a contravention of the 10th Amendment power and possibly the 14th as well. That's a power that if available at all, is only available to the individual states. Thus, Massachusetts law that requires each resident of the state to purchase health insurance is clearly within its bailiwick under the US Constitution.

Simply rolling back the scope of government intrusion isn't possible without the concomitant muzzling of federal spending. Both must be done at the same time. The sheer size of federal government has exceeded those of the 50 states as well as the various dependencies and commonwealths. This must end before the crushing weight of that government destroys what is already a fragile economy.

In "How Politicians and Regulators Caused the Sub-Prime Financial Crisis of 2007 and the Subsequent Crash of the Global Financial System in 2008, and Likely Will Again," By Kevin Villani, the author discusses at great length how the federal government at the direction of clueless Congresses have nearly brought the country to its knees financially. As a former SCP/acting CFP and Chief Economist at Freddie Mac and Deputy Assistant Secretary and Chief Economist at HUD as well as a former economist the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Mr. Villani has some keen insights as to why the credit market failed.

His main contention is that, "The US financial system crashed and almost collapsed in 2008, causing a globally systemic financial crisis and precipitating a global recession...That there was little or no market discipline is obvious. Contrary to the deregulation myths, regulation and politics had long since replaced market discipline in US home mortgage markets. Regulators didn't just fail systemically to mitigate excessive risk and leverage, the induced it. This didn't reflect a lack of regulatory authority or zeal, as politicians openly encouraged it."

Thus, the Dodd-Frank "Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection of Act of 2010" will do little or nothing to prevent a reoccurrence of further financial collapse in the future. At worst, it will guarantee such a collapse will be greatly magnified as the people of this nation will depend ever more upon the federal government to control the economy.

Representative Paul Ryan is the first Republican in a generation to promulgate a comprehensive plan, and then presented it to the country. He is presently the ranking Republican member of the Committee on the Budget in the US House of Representatives has developed a fairly comprehensive plan he calls
  1. PROVIDING HEALTH AND RETIREMENT SECURITY. The plan ensures universal access to health insurance; and it rescues and strengthens Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security – allowing them to fulfill their missions and making them permanently solvent.
  2. LIFTING THE DEBT BURDEN. It returns Federal spending growth to sustainable rates, and lifts the huge projected debt burden from the shoulders of future generations.
Having taken the time to read his plan in its entirety, I have come to the conclusion that should it be adopted without serious modification, it has the repair many of the systemic liabilities that are now part of the federal government. Ryan says that,
Now America is approaching a “tipping point” beyond which the Nation will be unable to change course – and this will lead to disastrous fiscal consequences, and an erosion of economic prosperity and the American character itself. The current administration and Congress are propelling the Nation to the brink of this precipice.
The time to change that course is now, before the economy comes completely under the direction of government bureaucrats who neither comprehend economic theory, nor have had the burden of actually having to meet a payroll.  Furthermore, the recent passage of the Wall Street "reform bill" has in actuality,
"will harm the very consumers it seeks to protect: by writing far-reaching rules and restricting risk, it will limit consumer choices, ration credit, and hamper individuals’ ability to make investment decisions."
Thus, the government now controls some 94% of the home lending market. This has grown from the 39% of control as recently as 2006. the time has come to eliminate both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, thereby removing the government from the mortgage lending industry.

The level of spending that the current administration and Congress have pursued will increase the level of government spending to $5,100,000,000,000.00 by 2019. Deficits under Mr. Obama's plan will never fall below $633,000,000,000.00 and will again rise above $1,000,000,000,000.00 by the end of the current decade.

This level of debt is unsustainable and will eventually cause the debt to GDP to exceed 82% by the end of the decade, a level not seen since World War II. This will cause the national debt to triple to more than $30,000,000,000,000.00. This unprecedented level of debt and spending is due entirely to domestic entitlement programs.

While reducing taxes would have the effect of encouraging economic growth, without a genuine commitment to reduce both the size and scope of government as well as spending cuts, then end result would still be the same...an ever spiraling debt and deficit. Mr. Ryan concludes,
This is the path on which America is now embarked. It creates a government that grows in size, scope, and influence to a magnitude unprecedented in peacetime. It generates unsustainable evels of spending and deficits, leading to a vicious cycle of unmanageable and ever-growing debt. This drags down the economy, causing standards of living to fall, leaving the next generation – for the first time in American history – worse off. At the heart of all this is a growth of dependency on government, which erodes self reliance and individual responsibility – and thus weakens America from the inside out.
As a nation, we need to act now. This is an ever more pressing issue as more time passes, the problems will only continue to mount making a change of course that much more difficult to accomplish. A recent example is the near 20 year long economic train wreck that has been experienced by the nations that have arisen from the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russia, the strongest nation, economically, is still in the throes of a prolonged recession that has been deepened with the current world wide recession. The CBO has described the accumulating economic problems thus
"The longer that policy action on the budget is put off, the more costly and difficult it will be to resolve the long-term budgetary imbalance. Delays in taking action would create three major problems:

The amount of government debt would rise, which would displace private capital – reducing the total resources available to the economy – and increase borrowing from abroad.

The share of Federal outlays devoted to paying interest on the Federal debt would grow, so lawmakers would have to make ever-larger policy changes to achieve balance. As interest costs rose, policymakers would be less able to pay for other national spending priorities and would have less flexibility to deal with unexpected developments (such as a war or recession). Moreover, rising interest costs would make the economy more vulnerable to a meltdown in financial markets.

Uncertainty about the economy would increase. The longer that action was put off, the greater the chance that policy changes would ultimately occur suddenly, possibly creating difficulties for some individuals and families, especially those in or near retirement." Congressional Budget Office, The Long-Term Budget Outlook, June 2009
Mr. Ryan proposes several changes to the current system. On health care, he seeks to sever health insurance from employment by ending the tax breaks on employer provided health insurance. Historically, this "benefit" stems from WW2 when employers, under wage freezes, were unable to attract prospective workers by offering better wages. Thus, many began to provide "free" health care, eventually ending up as a health insurance benefit. By severing this "benefit" from employment and by removing the artificial walls to interstate portability to health insurance companies (for example several states such as CA, NY and MD only permit 6-10 of the more than 1300 health insurance companies from offering insurance within their borders) would allow the market to act as a cost reducing force.

When more companies can compete for your business, they must either offer better services or reduce the costs of those services to gain your business.

Mr. Ryan would completely overhaul the current tax system. That system when it was first enacted in 1913, it contained a little over 400 pages of laws. In the nearly 100 years since it was enacted, the Federal tax code has grown exponentially and has more than 70,000 pages of opaque laws and regulations. Ignorance of those laws is not permitted under the current system and in tax courts, you are often guilty until proven innocent.

Since the start of this century, there have been more than 3,250 individual changes to that code, or more than one per day. Most of those changes involve giving exemptions to special interest groups who have spent billions bribing Congress (aka lobbying). Those tax breaks now add up to almost $1,000,000,000,000.00 per year. It's these exemptions and exceptions that have made our tax code inefficient and ridiculously complex. The Treasury Department’s own guide to tax regulations, and is issued to help users understand the tax code is six volumes long and runs to over 12,000 pages.

The tax code as it now stands has reduced the competiveness of this country. Furthermore, businesses are beginning to make very long term decisions based upon a much higher rate of taxation and that has lead to very little foreign capital investment due to much higher rates of taxation. Both France and Japan have signalled that they will greatly reduce the rate of corporate taxes they levy, thus having the effect of having the highest corporate tax rates in the world.

This rate of corporate taxation will hinder the ability of American business from competing in the global market place by making those few products that are still manufactured here, much more expensive to the world market. Additionally, by deterring any possible foreign investment, this high level of taxation acts as a further break upon economic grown and job creation. Higher tax rates has the additional effect of complicating the ability of multi-national corporations to conduct business within our borders as well as encouraging them to move manufacturing off-shore to avoid the tax, and therefore, further reducing employment here.
  • Full Repeal of the AMT. The alternative minimum tax originally was intended to apply to a small fraction of wealthy taxpayers. But because it was never indexed for inflation, it has in recent years threatened to ensnare millions of middle-income filers. To date, Congress has only extended protection from this AMT expansion on a year-by-year basis. This proposal eliminates the AMT entirely and permanently.
  • Elimination of Double Taxation of Savings. The current system essentially taxes savings twice: individuals pay tax on their earnings and, if they choose to invest those after-tax funds, they pay another tax on the return from their savings (i.e. interest, capital gains, or dividends). This proposal eliminates the second layer of taxation. Not only is this fair to individual taxpayers, it also is good for the economy. Greater savings leads to more investment and higher rates of productivity. Higher productivity ultimately drives increased living standards. The plan also eliminates the estate tax, another form of double taxation that is particularly harmful to small businesses.
  • Taxpayers Choice. The proposal allows individual income taxpayers to make their own choice about how best to pay their taxes. Within 10 years of enactment of this legislation, individuals choose one of the two tax systems. But they are allowed one additional changeover between the two systems over the course of their lifetimes. Individuals are also allowed to change tax systems when a major life event (death, divorce, or marriage) alters their tax filing status. Simplified Income Tax Rates. In contrast to the six tax rates in the current code, the simplified tax has just two rates: 10 percent on adjusted gross income [AGI] (as defined below) up to $100,000 for joint filers, and $50,000 for single filers; and 25 percent on taxable income above these amounts. These tax brackets are adjusted each year by a cost of- living adjustment as measured by increases in the consumer price index [CPI]. Taxable income equals gross earnings minus a standard deduction and personal exemption.
In addition, Mr. Ryan's simplified tax rates would be thus:
Single Filers
10%......$0-50,000.00
25%......$50,0000.00 and above

 Joint Filers
10%......$0-$100,000.00
25%......$100,000.00 and above
  • Broader Tax Base. The new, simplified code eliminates nearly all existing tax deductions, exclusions, and other special provisions, but retains the health care tax credit described above. As a result, it broadens the base of taxable income, allowing for lower income tax rates. Lower rates reduce disincentives to work and increase earnings.
  • Generous Standard Deductions and Personal Exemptions. The standard deduction is $25,000 for joint tax filers, $12,500 for single filers. The personal exemption is $3,500. The combination is equivalent to a $39,000 exemption for a family of four.
  • Prevention of Future Increase in Tax Burdens. This individual tax system – in combination with the business tax described below – is designed to keep the Federal tax burden at its current level; and as the economy recovers from the recession, it caps revenues at 19 percent of GDP.
  •  Greater Certainty. Under current law, the scheduled expiration of the 2001 and 2003 tax relief measures, along with a growing expansion of the AMT, will push overall tax. burdens to an unprecedented level in the coming years. By reforming the entire tax code and removing these upward pressures on taxes, this plan offers greater certainty so taxpayers can better plan for their financial futures.
  •  Business Consumption Tax. The proposal creates an 8.5-percent BCT on goods and services. The tax is calculated and administered based on the “subtraction method,” under which a business determines its tax liability by subtracting its total purchases from its total sales. The BCT is then imposed on this net receipts figure (i.e. the firm’s value added) and paid to the Federal Government once each reporting period (i.e. each business quarter).
  •  Elimination of the Corporate Income Tax. Like the individual income tax, the corporate income tax contains a host of tax preferences that end up narrowing the corporate tax base by up to 25 percent, according to the Treasury Department.62 That narrow tax base requires higher tax rates to raise a given amount of revenue. The current statutory U.S. corporate tax rate (including State corporate taxes) is 39 percent, the second highest tax rate in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development [OECD] and 8 percentage points higher than the OECD average.
All of these proposed changes would vastly broaden the tax base. Under the current system, roughly 45% of the population of this country pays no taxes at all. Additionally, by rationalizing the corporate tax system, the proposed system would encourage foreign investment.

Additionally, Mr. Ryan proposes to rationalize the current federal job training programs by creating a common set of metrics so that all 49 of the existing Federal job training programs can be compared for suceess/failure ensuring that policymakers as well as the public can see whether or not individuals are benefitting from the training. Furthermore, requires that both training and spending data for those programs are placed on a central website for ease of access to the general public. It will also require that the GAO and the Department of Labor’s Inspector General conduct regular routine audits and studies on the generated data, to ensure these programs are successfully serving all those who participate. The following will be required:
  • The type of training provided and the cost per student.
  • The employment status immediately after training, and then 1 year, 3 years, and 5 years after training.
  • Whether or not trainees are working in the field for which they were trained in order to determine whether the training led directly to employment.
  • The participant’s income level two years before and up to 5 years after training to determine if the training led to increased income.
  • The participation level in Federal support programs (i.e. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families [TANF], the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP], Supplemental Security Income, and the like) before and up to 5 years after training to determine if it led to self sufficiency.
Lastly, Mr. Ryan would seek to rationalize the budget process, not the least of which would end the practice of earmarking (the process wherein legislators insert political payoffs to campaign contributors). That in itself would save the nation hundreds of billions of dollars. The most fundamental change would be the end of deficit spending. Thus no spending increases would be permitted without equal cuts in other areas. At the present time, mandatory spending as then Congressional Budget Office Director, Peter Orszag said,
"Spending for mandatory programs has increased from less than one-third of total Federal outlays in the early 1960s to more than one-half in recent years. Most of that growth has been concentrated in Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Together, gross outlays for those programs now account for about 45 percent of Federal outlays, compared with 2 percent in 1950 (before the health programs were created) and 25 percent in 1975." Orszag testimony to the Committee on the Budget, 13 December 2007.
This level of spending is unsustainable without the above proposed reforms. The current system does not predict the long-term cost of any program and further, shields them from changes that would keep them from remaining unsustainable. Mr.'s Ryan's proposals in A Roadmap for America’s Future
"...establishes a binding cap on total spending as a percentage of GDP at the spending levels that are projected to result from the plan. It requires the President’s budget and the CBO to make projections annually in comparison to these spending limits. It requires a comprehensive review of the long-term budget outlook every 5 years. If spending gets out of control again, and Congress fails to address the problem during the 5-year review, the proposal provides a mechanism to slow the growth in faster spending programs by no more than 1 percent, to bring spending back in line with the spending limits."  Statement of Senator Bayh, 14 October 2009
Over the past 2 years, non-defense discretionary spending, has grown at double-digit rates, even after excluding “stimulus” and emergency funding. As Senator Bayh of Indiana has said, Washington is “serially incapable of getting Federal spending under control.”69 In addition to caps on total spending, the Roadmap establishes enforceable caps on discretionary spending.

The proposal also requires a three-fifths supermajority vote in the House and Senate to pass legislation that increases revenue."

Thus, for the first time in nearly 80 years, we have the opportunity to correct those misguided policies that have been enacted and return America to a sustainable future. One in which the government returns to what was intended by the founders.
